How to Make Friends in Phoenix Who Share Your Interests
In Phoenix you can go a year without seeing the same face twice. Where to find your people, and how to turn one of them into a friend.
Team Alyke

You moved to Phoenix for the job or a clean slate, and you've got the summit-at-sunrise photo to prove it. What you don't have is someone in the photo with you. Everything is a drive, the people you meet live on the far side of the Valley, and your real friends are two time zones away.
You want a person or two who'd be at the trailhead before the lot fills and still want breakfast after. Here's how to find them.
Who you'll still be hiking with next year
Think of the friend you kept from your last city: you liked the same things and wanted them at the same pace. A friendship holds when someone's personality fits yours and your interests overlap, and here the overlap is easy to spot, like the hiker at the gate when it opens.
Personality decides whether you're both awake for it; a sunrise hiker and a night owl can like each other and never cross paths. A study of 295,320 people found friends are more alike than psychologists thought, judged by what people do, not what they say.
Why it's hard here, and why you're not alone
Phoenix covers 518 square miles, more than six times the size of Seattle, so you don't bump into anyone twice by accident. About one in seven residents arrived in the past year, so the stranger beside you at the trailhead is probably new too.
Nationally, one adult in eight says they have no close friends, four times the share in 1990, yet nearly half made a new friend in the past year. Plenty of people here want what you want.
Three places to become a regular
Pick one side of the Valley and one of these, and keep the slot. Everyone there already chose what you chose.
Hike with the rangers, then keep the trailhead
Phoenix Parks runs Hike Right PHX, free monthly ranger-led hikes for every level that start early and need sign-up ahead. Between hikes, keep one trailhead and one morning a week. Piestewa Peak and South Mountain open at 5 a.m., and the weekday headlamp crowd repeats; say good morning to whoever stops where you stop.

Run on Monday nights at South Mountain
Aravaipa Running hosts a free, all-levels trail run every Monday at 6:30 p.m. from the Pima Canyon Trailhead, with three pace groups, regroup stops for the slowest and a brewery social in Tempe after. The effort is two months of Mondays, and staying for the social.
Join a city league as a free agent
Scottsdale Adult Sports lets you register alone and places you on a free agent team; coed kickball plays Tuesday to Thursday evenings at city parks. That's a season of weeknights with strangers, and around the third game one of them becomes the person you save a bench spot for.
Any of these works, given a season and the nerve to talk first. To skip to the one person whose idea of a Saturday is yours, there's a quicker way.
The easiest way to find someone who hikes at your hour
Alyke is built to help you find intentional friends, one person at a time. Most friend apps hand you generic recommendations. Alyke starts your feed with the people who share your vibe the most, based on your interests and personality instead of your looks. That's what makes it the easy route: instead of a season of Mondays and a cold hello, you start with someone who picked what you picked.
You pick interests and write one line for each. When a line in the feed makes you want to reply, reply; that's the friend request. When the vibe is mutual, you're friends, and your chat begins at the line you replied to, already about a trail.

Alyke Pro filters by personality, interest, state, language, ethnicity or star sign, handy when you want people who also think the alarm is worth it.
Questions people ask
Is it normal to have no friends after moving to Phoenix?
Completely normal. About one in seven residents arrived in the past year, so lots of people around you are starting over too. Give yourself a season of weekly plans. Alyke lets you start meeting people this week: add your interests to your profile, then comment on someone else's profile to send them a friend request.
What can you do with a new friend in Phoenix when it's too hot?
Go early or go indoors. A sunrise hike at Piestewa Peak, which opens at 5 a.m., is done before the heat, while a climbing gym, the Phoenix Art Museum or a board game cafe works any afternoon. On Alyke, you can see which interests a new friend has added, like Art or Gaming, and pick the indoor plan they'd enjoy most.
How do you meet people on an app without weeks of chatting?
Suggest a plan once you've found something you both really like, usually within the first week, and keep it short and specific. Long chats with no plan tend to fade. Alyke puts common ground up front by starting your feed with people who share your interests and have a similar personality, so you can suggest a plan around what you share almost right away.
What's the best app to make friends after moving to Phoenix?
Alyke is a friendship app for iPhone made for meeting people one-on-one, which helps when you've just moved to Phoenix and don't know anyone yet. You don't need friends of friends or a local group. You add your interests, and Alyke shows you the people who share the most with you first, each one verified by phone number and photos. Send your first friend request before your first open weekend, so you have a plan by the time it arrives.
How do you find hiking buddies in Phoenix?
Alyke helps you find hiking buddies in Phoenix by letting you see who lists Hiking, Camping or Mountains as interests, along with a short sentence about each. Look for someone who writes something like "sunrise hikes before work," since summer trails are much easier before the heat. Comment on that sentence to send a friend request. For the first hike, pick a busy trailhead at sunrise and bring plenty of water.
Does Alyke show how far away someone lives in Phoenix?
No, Alyke shows only a person's state, never their exact location or distance, so you can meet new friends in Phoenix without sharing where you live. In a city that covers 518 square miles, that means you and a new friend agree together on where to meet. Profiles carry a badge once the phone number and photos are checked. Share your side of town in the chat once you're comfortable, then pick a spot halfway.
