Two friends with cafecitos on a seawall at sunrise

Saturday in Miami is never the problem. There's a rooftop, somebody's boat, a birthday in Wynwood, and by midnight you've swapped numbers with half the party. Then it's Tuesday, that night's group chat has gone quiet, and you still have nobody to call for a cafecito or a sunrise swim.

What you're after is one or two people, anywhere from Brickell to West Palm, who like what you like, and text back on a weekday. They're here, and this is how you find them.

Why some friends last past the weekend

Think about the friend who stuck. Odds are you liked the same things and wanted them at the same speed, and you never had to perform for them. Two things did that: personalities that clicked, and interests you both chased.

In Miami that might be the neighbor who'd rather do Calle Ocho on the last Friday of the month than a club, the same as you. It goes deeper than taste, too. Dartmouth researchers scanned friends' brains as they watched the same videos and found that friends “process the world around them in exceptionally similar ways.”

Almost everyone here started from scratch

Most people here didn't arrive with their people either. More than half of Miami-Dade residents were born in another country, and last year the county drew more new arrivals from abroad than all but two others in the U.S., so the person beside you at the ventanita may be new too. Nationally, about one in eight adults have no close friends, four times the 1990 share, and almost half made a new friend last year. Plenty of people want what you want, and they're looking too.

Three ways to meet them in real life

Each puts you among people who already share one interest with you, if you keep coming back.

  1. Runners talking on an evening group run between high-rises

A free group run of about 3.5 miles from 1300 Brickell Avenue, all levels. Sign the waiver, come every Tuesday for two months and run beside whoever keeps your pace. Prefer the sand? 3rd Street Beach Yoga meets at 7 every morning in Miami Beach, free since 1998.

  2. A kickball team laughing at home plate under lights

Sign up for a coed league by yourself

South Florida Club Sport puts solo sign-ups on a team of people who also came alone, from kickball in Brickell to leagues at Mills Pond Park in Fort Lauderdale and PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. It takes a season of showing up for strangers; by the third game you'll know who stays after.

  3. Two friends at a waterfront concert at dusk

3Standing planMonthly, Miami to West Palm

Pick one culture night and go every time

Viernes Culturales fills Calle Ocho on the last Friday of the month, Sunday Jazz Brunch fills Esplanade Park on Fort Lauderdale's Riverwalk on the first Sunday, and Clematis by Night runs Thursdays from 6 to 9 on the West Palm waterfront. Pick the closest and never skip it; regulars start talking to each other.

All three work. They also take a couple of months and the nerve to talk first, and you'll meet plenty of people before one fits. If you'd rather begin with that person, there's a shortcut.

The easiest way to find a friend who texts back on Tuesday

Alyke is built to help you find intentional friends, one person at a time. Most friend apps hand you generic recommendations. Alyke starts your feed with the people who share your vibe the most, based on your interests and personality instead of your looks. So you skip the months of Tuesdays and the cold hello and start with someone whose interests and personality already fit.

You pick your interests, Beaches or Dancing, and give each one a line in your own words. When a line catches you, say a hot take on cafecito, answer it; that answer is your friend request. If they like how you sound, you're friends, and the chat begins with what you said.

Questions people ask

How do you find people in Miami who only want friendship?

Go where friendship is the point, like a beach volleyball pickup game, a run club or an app made for friends. Alyke is a friendship app whose profiles are built around interests, personality picks and prompts rather than looks, and every friend request starts as a comment on something a person put on their profile, so there's no confusion about why you said hello.

Is it safe to meet someone from a friendship app in Miami?

Yes, if you keep the first meeting short and public, like an afternoon coffee at a busy Wynwood cafe, and a quick video call beforehand can settle any nerves. Alyke checks each member's phone number and photos, and a badge on a profile shows the check is done. Profiles also show only your state, never your exact location.

Which friend app should you try first?

Try one whose profiles tell you something real about a person. On Alyke, each interest on a profile can have a short sentence about it, and people answer prompts like "Recommend me a ___, I'm begging". You add someone as a friend by commenting on one of those, so you're never stuck starting with "hey."

What's a good app to make friends in Miami?

Alyke is a friendship app for iPhone that helps you make friends in Miami around shared interests and personality, so the people you meet already like what you like. Your feed starts with the closest fit, and you add someone by commenting on what they wrote, like a note under their Coffee interest. Every account is checked by phone number and photos. Fill in all eight interests, since more detail gives people more to comment on.

How do you make friends in Miami outside the nightlife?

Alyke helps you make friends in Miami outside the nightlife by showing you people who share daytime interests, like Coffee, Beaches or Pickleball. Every profile shows whether someone prefers Chill Hangouts or Energetic Spaces, which tells you who'd pick a slow Sunday over a club. Comment on one of their interests to send a friend request. Make your first plan a daytime one, like a morning run with the Brickell Run Club and coffee after.

Can you find Spanish-speaking friends in Miami on Alyke?

Yes, Alyke lets you show the languages you speak on your profile, and the Alyke Pro language filter helps you find friends in Miami who speak Spanish, Portuguese or English. That matters in Miami-Dade, where three in four people speak a language other than English at home. Pro also adds filters for state, personality, star sign and interests. Add a note to one of your interests saying whether you'd like to practice a language.
